COQUITLAM - The Iroquois Nationals showed skill, creativity, offensive might and poise in a 22-4 win over England in the lone Blue Division game on Friday July 8 at the 2016 Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Under-19 Men's Lacrosse World Championships presented by Novus.
Earlier in the day, Germany won 19-2 over Taiwan, Ireland defeated Scotland 14-9, Israel beat Hong Kong 10-3, and China won its opener over Mexico 15-3, albeit in game that does not count int he standings.
In their decisive win, Tehoka Nanticoke paced the Iroquois with five goals and an assist, with other goals coming from Austin Staats (4G, 1A), Skye Sunday (3G, 1A), Matthew Bennett (3G, 2A), Sekawnee Baker (3G), Larson Sundown (2G, 2A), Chase Scanlan (1G, 2A), and Skkylar Thomas (1G). Tyler Armstrong and Brody Bartell combined to make 14 saves in net.
Joseph Cara scored twice for England, while Jake Parker and Elliot Leonard added singles.
The Iroquois were lethal in tight, with great passing from crease to crease. Dougie Jamieson, who is one of the top box lacrosse goalies in North America, showed great skill at the faceoff X winning 12 out of 14 draws. And on special teams, the Iroquois were outstanding going 4-for-9 with the man-advantage and surrendering just one powerplay goal.
The Iroquois (1-0) have the day off Saturday and will play host Canada (0-1) on Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. England (0-1) faces Canada on Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
GERMANY 19, TAIWAN 2 - BOX SCORE
Germany led from start to finish in a 19-2 win over Taiwan on Friday afternoon. This was Taiwan's first-ever FIL tournament game.
Jeremiah Vanderkin-Jus led Germany with five goals and one assist, while Per-Anders Olters (4G) and Valts Grasis (3G, 1A) also had multi-goal games. Lukas Kins, Leonard Noring, Jakob Bockermann, Soren Spiegel, Finn Post, Austin Easterly, and Kai Sontowski added singles in the win. Hung-Wei Liang scored Taiwan's first-ever goal in FIL play, and Yu-Hung Hu also added one in the loss.
Germany (1-0) will face Mexico (0-1), while Taiwan (0-1) faces Hong Kong (0-1) on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
IRELAND 14, SCOTLAND 9 - BOX SCORE
Making their U19-level debut in FIL men's lacrosse, Ireland defeated Scotland 14-9 after building an early lead and never trailing in the lone Green Division game of the day. Jason Reid and Rory Madigan scored three goals each, while Tom Lyons, Patrick Magliocchino, Conor Austin and Connor Krusac had two a piece for the Irish. The Scots were paced from a hat trick from Colin Uyeki and two-goal performances from Calmen Tihansky and Jonathan Shaw, with singles coming from Josh Richardson and Corrie Bruce.
Ireland (1-0) jumped out to a 5-1 lead after the opening quarter before the Scots (0-1) cut the lead to 8-5 at the half in a physical affair with several multiple-penalty situations.
The Irish face Korea (0-0) on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. while Scotland will look for its first win on Sunday against Germany (1-0) at 12:30 p.m.
ISRAEL 10, HONG KONG 3 - BOX SCORE
Nick Schulkin (San Rafael, CA) scored five goals and added an assist, and David Metzger was terrific in goal as Israel opened up a 6-0 lead in the first half en route to a 10-3 victory. Alon Berkowitz and Joshua Bernstein added two goals each for Israel, while Zachary Ornstein scored once. For Hong Kong, David Houghton scored twice and Siu On Ng added one. Samuel Dic Sum Lai came in at the half and played very well for Hong Kong in the cage, replacing Lai Yin Fung who got the start.
This was the first game at the FIL U19 level for both teams.
Israel (1-0) will face Taiwan (0-1) on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. while Hong Kong (0-1) will face Taiwan on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
CHINA 15, MEXICO 3 - BOX SCORE
Eric Wang scored seven points to lead Team China to a 15-3 victory over Team Mexico in a non-counting game, the first game of the tournament for both teams. Wang scored six goals and added one assist for the Chinese, who scored the game's first six goals and led 9-2 at halftime. Kurtis Shum and Matthew McIlwrick added three goals each for Team China, with singles coming from Martin Ding Ma , Kevin Dong and Henry Haigang Yao. The first goal for Mexico at the FIL U-19 level came off the stick of Adolfo Castro Fernandez del Castillo, one of his two on the day. Mexico's other goalscorer was Tlaloc Orozco-Cohen.
This was the first game at the FIL U19 level for both teams.
China (1-0) is back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m., when they face Korea (0-0). Mexico (0-1) will play its next game on Saturday at 10 a.m. against Germany (1-0).
